Industrial Themed Cards

During this long, hot, dry summer, its been a respite to stay cool inside and keep creating. I have been working on a few projects this summer. Mainly making lots of hand made cards. Here are a few of my newest creations with our signature industrial look.

I know I am suppose to be de-cluttering and organizing my studio space, but every time I try, I find a project that needs to be finished (and boy do I have a lot of projects to finish). There is no excuse this time though, because these cards are made from the brand new Kaisercraft paper just released. The line of paper is called Factory 42 and I couldn’t resist the industrial theme to make these cards.

Hope you enjoyed!       Val

Stay tuned for more organizational inspiration from me. LOL

Vintage Handmade Tobacco Cards

Handmade Cards using Vintage Tobacco Cards

Just sharing some cards I  finished making….

I always go through my stash of ephemera looking for paper to incorporate in my art.  I came across a stack of 1912 Tobacco Cards that I collected long ago. They were a collection of beautiful flowers and butterflies (my favs). I didn’t want them to sit in a box any longer so I knew I had to transform them into an art project. Tobacco cards are miniature works of art and needed to be enjoyed by others.  Incorporating them into a card was my game plan. Mindful not to alter the original tobacco card, I presented them in a small vellum envelope (Sizziz Die).

I also came across a stash of Song Cards from the 1950’s. So I knew I had the basics for the cards I had in mind to make.  I also have sheet music from 1909 Etude Music Magazine that I love to use. The Song cards became the background for the Tobacco cards on the front of the card. The sheet music was used on the inside of the card, as a background for a place to write a personal sentiment.

I choose cardstock in colors to compliment the Tobacco card and all of the paper and ephemera was aged with Tim Holtz Distress Ink (Vintage Photo & Gathered Twig). The front just needed a few embellishments to highlight the Tobacco card so I added some metal key paper clips (Prima) and various metal and wood trinkets (Prima & Tim Holtz). I added some inspirational words using Tim Holtz Ideology Small Talk. These are great because they look like they have been typed on an old typewriter (I have a 1910 Underwood that I use to type words to use in my art, but these are much easier). A few pearl beads in the corners, and I was done.

I loved the authenticity of the ephemera, making the card truly vintage. These one of a kind cards could also be framed to be on display for all to enjoy.

Hope you enjoyed!       Val

Vintage Butterfly Cards

Hi There – Happy Spring…

I love these vintage styled cards with butterfly designs –  remind us of spring, right!  I recently went to a card class at a local Scrapbook store and made some awesome cards using Hunkydory – Flight of the Butterfly card kits. The class was fast paced and fantastic – we made 29 cards in a few hours. With the “left overs” (from our generous store owner), I made another 31 cards!! I usually use more “handmade” techniques when I make cards.  But these were so beautiful and vintage looking that I couldn’t resist. Here are a few of the cards I made at home with the remainder of my kit…

I have to say that butterflies are one of my favourite designs. I have a lot of butterflies in my studio – card stock, dies, stamps, art work, you name it. So I could not resist taking this butterfly card class.  The background paper in this kit is to die for – check it out on The cut-out sheets of sentiments and butterfly designs were easy to “make” the card.  I loved the layering, using the copper glitter and gold foil card stock, it gave the cards lots of bling with a vintage tone.  And to add dimension, I used foam tape – a lot of it!  I hope the close ups help you see the dimension and depth of the cards – although much more dramatic in person I have to say.

If you are like me and make a lot of cards, it becomes expected from friends and family that they receive a hand made card (with love of course). But sometimes, life rushes along and you need a card like – now! So these quick cards will be perfect for those times when birthdays and holidays creep into my creative time.

Hope you enjoyed!       Happy Spring!     Val

Steampunk Cards

Steampunk Themed Cards

These handmade cards have a real steampunk and industrial look. I love the blue coloured highlights. The gear embellishments are die cuts from Memory Box. I cut them from Boutique So Silk 130 lb. black card stock. The paper is actually plastic and creates a nice crisp glossy metal look and feel. For the background I embossed the edges with Stampendous Aged Aqua Embossing Enamel. It creates a distressed edge with a tough of gold glimmer. The main focal point is layers of the image from Hot Off the Press die cuts, supported with foam tape creating depth.

Materials Used:

  • Hot Off the Press Steampunk Paper & Stickers
  • Hot Off the Press Steampunk Layered Die Cuts
  • Memory Box Gears Dies
  • Stampendous Embossing Enamel
  • Foam Dots & Dimensional Tape
  • Black 5×7 Card Base & Envelope

Birthday Book

Inspired by a project found at Graphic 45, I created this Birthday Book. Using Graphic 45 Place in Time paper, folding them into 6×6 pocket pages, and creating monthly booklets to keep all your Birthdates and Anniversary dates. This attractive heirloom memory keeper is always handy while on display. Forget email alerts and phone alarms; the tactile feel of paper and the visual appeal of a real book is timeless, and besides it won’t get lost in a cloud.

Materials Used

  • Graphic 45 Place  in Time
  • Book Board
  • Be Creative Tape
  • Ranger Distress Inks
