Industrial Themed Cards

During this long, hot, dry summer, its been a respite to stay cool inside and keep creating. I have been working on a few projects this summer. Mainly making lots of hand made cards. Here are a few of my newest creations with our signature industrial look.

I know I am suppose to be de-cluttering and organizing my studio space, but every time I try, I find a project that needs to be finished (and boy do I have a lot of projects to finish). There is no excuse this time though, because these cards are made from the brand new Kaisercraft paper just released. The line of paper is called Factory 42 and I couldn’t resist the industrial theme to make these cards.

Hope you enjoyed!       Val

Stay tuned for more organizational inspiration from me. LOL

Wings & Heart Altered Clock

This mixed media altered clock started with a thrift store vintage clock.  Inside the clock are layers of gears, with a flaming heart as the focal point.  I textured and painted the metal clock’s outer frame with paints from Finnabair’s Prima line. Then I glued on an assortment of embellishments (gears, wings, flowers, etc.). With the clock being so deep, I made layers to bring the centre piece forward. I created depth with layers of the gears using jumbo foam dots. The focal point is a flaming heart painted red and purple with Finnabair waxes, and highlighted with metallic paint.

Materials Used:

  • Thrift Store Vintage Clock
  • Prima Artifacts Wings and Heart
  • Tim Holts Gears – Chipboard
  • Foam Dots –  EK tools 1/2 inch
  • Finnabair’s Antique Brilliance Waxes
  • Assorted Embellishments
  • Prima Paints – Art Alchemy

Patina Paint Brush

This mixed media altered art piece started with a thrift store paint brush.  I was very inspired by a tutorial I saw on Finnabair’s blog (www.finnabair.com).  Three dimensional gears, bolts, and metal art pieces were attached to the brush after it was primed with clear gesso. Then I followed the tutorial using Finnabair’s Art Extravagance Patina Paste Set to paint it with the blues and bronze colours. The two blue pastes provide a gritty aged texture while the bronze paint offers up a glorious metallic shimmer.

Materials Used:

  • Thrift Store Paint Brush
  • Prima Patina Paste Set
  • Prima Metal Gears and Bolts
  • Prima Resin Heart
  • Assorted Metal Gears
  • Assorted Embellishments & Buttons
  • Chipboard Die Cut Gears Tim Holtz

Altered Clock with Butterfly and Gears

This mixed media altered clock started with a thrift store vintage clock.  Inside the clock are layers of textures and embellishments.  I textured and painted the metal clock’s outer frame with paints from Finnabair’s Prima line. Then I glued on an assortment of embellishments (gears, button, butterflies etc.). With the clock being so deep, I made layers to bring the centre piece forward. I created depth with layers of the gears and trinkets using jumbo foam dots. The focal point is a butterfly die cut, crackled, then painted and highlighted with metallic paint.

Materials Used:

  • Thrift Store Vintage Clock
  • Tim Holtz Butterfly Dies
  • Tim Holts Gears – Chipboard
  • Foam Dots –  EK tools 1/2 inch
  • Finnibair Mechanical Cogs and Gears

Hand Painted Easter Eggs

Gold Leaf Hand Painted Eggs

These hand decorated eggs started out as cheap plastic dollar store Easter eggs. First I covered them with two layers of gesso. Then I painted them with two different turquoise and patina acrylic paints. I sealed the paint with a layer of medium and after drying, a layer of crackle paste was added to created texture. The patina colours showed through the cracks, but I added a bit more of the blue paint glaze to highlight the crackle finish even more. I finished the eggs by adding veins of gold leaf that was variegated with blue in the gold. These will make a nice Easter décor accent. Happy Easter.

Materials Used:

  • Dollar Store Plastic Easter Eggs
  • Acrylic Paint – Dina Wakley Turquoise
  • Ranger Multi Medium Matte
  • La D’ore Gold Leaf – Variegated Blue
  • Birds Nest for Display
  • Cloche for Display

Spring All Occasion Cards

These handmade cards will make a lovely gift for a spring time birthday, mother’s day, or Easter. Layers of cardstock, stickers, flowers, and rhinestone embellishments are added on top of the postcard image. I love the versatility of the cards which have a feminine and vintage look. They are blank inside so you can add your own sentiment. The assemblage of embellishments is raised with foam tape creating depth and dimension.

Materials Used:

  • Post Card Cardstock – Spring Designs
  • Spring Flowers & Easter Stickers
  • Spring Cardstock Embellishment Designs
  • White & Red  5×7 Cardstock Base & Envelope
  • Foam Dots & Dimensional Tape
  • Assorted Patterned and Plain Coloured Card Stock
  • Paper Flowers & Assorted Rhinstones & Twine

Steampunk Themed Cards

These handmade cards have a real steampunk and industrial look. I love the blue coloured highlights. The gear embellishments are die cuts from Memory Box. I cut them from Boutique So Silk 130 lb. black card stock. The paper is actually plastic and creates a nice crisp glossy metal look and feel. For the background I embossed the edges with Stampendous Aged Aqua Embossing Enamel. It creates a distressed edge with a tough of gold glimmer. The main focal point is layers of the image from Hot Off the Press die cuts, supported with foam tape creating depth.

Materials Used:

  • Hot Off the Press Steampunk Paper & Stickers
  • Hot Off the Press Steampunk Layered Die Cuts
  • Memory Box Gears Dies
  • Stampendous Embossing Enamel
  • Foam Dots & Dimensional Tape
  • Black 5×7 Card Base & Envelope
  • Assorted Colours of Card Stock

Industrial Gears Window

I love all things industrial. Really enjoyed creating a picture for my wall from an old weathered window pane. Just added some gears, ropes, and pulleys to add a little industrial flare to this piece. I also distressed the three pictures (papers from Tim Holtz), before gluing them on.

Materials Used

  • Vintage Window Pane
  • Steampunk Scrapbook Paper
  • Tim Holtz Gears
  • Paint and Glue
  • Rope, Wheels, and Pulley

Steampunk Sewing Machine Frame

This Steampunk assemblage really works well with the antique wood frame from a 1898 New Williams sewing machine.  I love antique sewing machines – they look like Steampunk artwork in and of themselves.  Tissue with vintage styled text was decoupaged onto art board to create the background.  The dress form image is card stock and gears, wheels, and butterfly add a Steampunk flare to finish off this art piece.

Materials Used

  • 1898 Sewing Machine Frame
  • Tim Holtz  Terminology Tissue Paper
  • Timeless; Marion Smith Designs Paper
  • Finnibair Mechanical Butterfly
  • Finnibair Mechanical cogs and gears
  • Metal Embellishments & Key

Handmade Vintage Cards using Tobacco Cards

I made these handmade vintage cards using 1912 Tobacco Collector Cards featuring flowers and butterflies. The Song Card Sheets add a sentimental touch while the inside sentiment features sheet music from 1910.  A few embellishments makes the card one of a kind with a little bling.

  • 1912 Tobacco Collector Cards
  • Vintage Song Card Sheets from the 1950’s
  • Sheet music from 1910 on inside of card
  • Inspiration message – Tim Holtz Ideology
  • Metal paper clip – Prima Marketing
  • Vellum envelope – Sizzix Die Cut
  • Various metal & wooden embellishments
